President inaugurates centenary celebration of Patna HC
President
Pranab Mukherjee is being received by Bihar Governor Keshari Nath
Tripathi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at the airport in Patna on
Friday.
President
Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday inaugurated the centenary celebration of
Patna High Court and underlined the glorious judicial history of it.
The President also released a postal stamp on the occasion.
While
addressing the august gathering of judges and members of civil society
the Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar requested that the number of
judges in Patna High Court should be increased for the speedy disposal
of the cases.
Mr. Kumar also thanked judiciary for establishing rule of law in the state.
Bihar,
perhaps, has the highest number of conviction rate in the country after
he took over the regime, Mr. Kumar said on the occasion.

Union Information and Technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Bihar
Governor Kesharinath Tripathi, chief justice of Patna High Court L
Narsimha Reddy too addressed the gathering celebrated amid tight
security in the premises of Patna High Court.
All the
dignitaries recalled the glorious judicial past of the Patna High Court
which had produced a galaxy of legal luminaries, including the first
President of India Dr Rajendra Prasad.
Dr Prasad had practiced law in Patna High Court.
The speakers also sought the need for fast and speedy justice to those needy and poor people.
The Patna High Court will turn 100 early next year as it had commenced work on March 1, 1916.
On
December 1, 1913, the then Viceroy of India, Lord Hardinge had laid the
foundation stone of the Patna High Court building and inaugurated it on
February 3, 1916.
Sir Edward Maynard Des Champs Chamier was the first chief justice of the Patna High Court.
