Inaugurating the State-level sport meet for differently abled persons here on Friday, he said Tamil Nadu was the only State in the country to announce a prize money of Rs.1 crore to gold medallists in Paralympics and Rs. 75 lakh and Rs. 50 lakh for silver and bronze medallists respectively.
Similarly, for the winners of Para Commonwealth Games and Para Asian Games, the government had announced prize money of Rs. 50 lakh, Rs. 30 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh for gold, silver and bronze medallists respectively, he said.
The Minister said the government bore the expenses of Rs. 1.39 lakh each for seven differently abled persons who took part in the international track events. The government was building a swimming pool for hydrotherapy for differently abled persons in Chennai at a cost of Rs. 5.5 crore, he said.
He said the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) had been organising the State-level sports meet for differently abled persons for the past three years, allocating Rs. 15 lakh for track events and Rs. 30 lakh for games, he said.
Dr. Sundararaj said the government had issued orders for building a sports hostel at Seethakathi Sethupathy Stadium here at an estimated cost of Rs. 60 lakh to accommodate hockey, volleyball and cricket players and athletes.
The Minister congratulated Collector K. Nanthakumar for helping the SDAT to organise the meet within a short notice. District Sports and Youth Welfare Officer S. Joseph Path Briton said about 1,000 men and women from all the districts of the State turned up for the three-day event.
The meet would conclude on Sunday with track events, he added.
